LEAGUE FOOTBALLERS OF 1950 —ROVERS

The Argus 29-Apr-1950 P6

IN ANY grading of rovers ALAN RUTHVEN, No. 1 rover of Fitzroy, would be high on the list. He was a champion school- boy player at Gore st, Fitzroy, and played for Victoria in interstate school games. It was natural therefore that the senior selectors should have kept an eye on him, and he was only 16 when he came to the club.

He had six senior games in 1940 and seven in the next year. Playing in the 1941 grand final with the seconds, he suffered a ruptured liver, which kept him out of the game all the next season. In fact, it was thought that he would never play the game again. However, 1943 found him in the thick of it; in 1944 he began to show his mettle; and he has been a star rover ever since, except that he was not so brilliant last year. However, that is regarded as only a phase, and his training form this year suggests that he will be back at his brilliant best again.

In the last six years he has been a most consistent player. Almost the only games he has missed have been those played while he was out of the State playing for Victoria. His record of 133 games and 276 goals almost speaks for itself.

In 1945 and 1946 he won the trophy for best and fairest player in the club. He was runner-up in 1947, and won again in 1948 and 1949- surely a model of consistency and usefulness. He was captain of his club in 1948 after having been vice-captain for the two years previously. He was again vice-captain last year, when Norman Smith came from Melbourne to become captain coach.

A pleasing personality has made Alan a popular member of the team. He is a good mixer, moderate in his habits, and a great home-lover-he is married. He has been the representative of the players on the committee for some years and takes his share of the social activities. His job is that of a traveller with a firm of corset manufacturers.

"When such a brilliant player comes under notice it is natural that country and interstate clubs should seek his services. Last year, for coaching only, he was offered £18 a week to go to Hamilton. Almost at the same time Broken Hill offered him £30 a week, including a job, to be coach there. Fitzroy could not afford to lose him, and persuaded him to decline both.

Alan's hobby in the summertime is cricket. He has made centuries for Fitzroy seconds and is also a wicket keeper.
