LEAGUE FOOTBALLERS OF 1950-CENTRE HALF-BACKS – Percy Taylor

Argus 13-May-1950 P7

For sheer brilliance, BERT DEACON, of Carlton, is hard to surpass, and supporters still talk about his superb form in 1947, when he won the Brownlow Medal for best and fairest player in" the League, principally because of his great play at centre half-back.

Carlton supporters would like to see Bert back in that form, but he has not been so consistent since. He has superb dash and judgment, and is so quick off the mark that opponents gasp when he flies past or over them and streaks away with the ball.

It was a happy day for Carlton when Preston cleared Bert in 1942. He had played for Carlton while the V.F.A. was in recess, although his career had been interrupted by the war. This season should see him play his 100th game, as he ended last year at 91 games.

Few players are better liked than Bert. He has a happy disposition and a cheery smile, which must be a great asset to him in his business he is-a salesman. He is married and has two children. Bert is developing a summertime interest in golf.
