LEAGUE FOOTBALLERS OF 1950 — RUCKMEN by Percy Taylor

Argus 22 April 1950 p.3 The Argus Weekend Magazine

BOB MCCLURE, 6ft. 2in. 14/2 st. red-headed follower, played a most conspicuous part in Essendon's premiership last year. He is the true type of ruckman in that he palms the ball to his rover, but he is fortunate in having grand rovers to carry on his good work. Bob is fast, strong, and determined - of course he would have that characteristic, which is possessed by all those who are entitled to be called "Red" or "Blue"!

Like most followers, he is a grand high mark, and that asset is of tremendous value, to his side, even when he is resting in defence. He was in uniform at a period when he normally could have been expected to develop as a footballer, but he was only 21 when stories of his prowess in Army football began to leak out. He played his first game in 1946, and had carried his total to 68 when the grand final was played last season. Another fine season is predicted for this young giant.
