Team: Brunswick (VFA)
Location: Brunswick Oval (Brunswick)
Date: Probably 1936

Top row - Lee, Unknown, Unknown, Alex Gillon, Unknown, Unknown, Ted Fay, Stan Vaughan
Middle row - Stan Palmer, Colin Boyd, Jim Dowling, Roy McKay, Unknown, A.Thompson, Hugh Donnelly
Front row - Tom Lasky, R.Kennedy, Unknown, Tom Clarke

This is most definitely Brunswick Football Club’s (VFA) First Eighteen photographed in front of a partially full grandstand at Brunswick ground, circa mid-late thirties. Star rover Jim Dowling (who won the VFA Medal in successive years 1934 and 1935) is pictured third from left in the middle row. The player fourth from left in the middle row is ex-Footscray star Roy McKay (101 VFL games, 1930-35). McKay was appointed Brunswick’s captain-coach for the 1936 season and coached the Senior Team until the end of the 1940 season. He led them to three successive VFA grand finals, including the 1938 premiership. It is possible the photo was taken in 1938 but I suspect either 1936 or 1937.

Ted Fay, who had played 28 games for Essendon (1932-34), was revered as the best full-back in the VFA and won the Recorder Cup in 1941. Alex Gillon later became the VFA’s most respected administrator. Tom Clarke played over 100 games for Essendon and was the father of athletics great Ron and Essendon football champion Jack. Hugh Donnelly had played for Northcote and Coburg.

Very sunny – note shadows and boy in crowd shading his eyes. This may account for the very light image. The two mascots appear to be in school uniform. Match day. Black shorts.

Considering McKay was captain fom 1936, that the team lists best match 1936, and that some players in the photo were at different clubs in 1937 and 1938, this photo is probably 1936.

Probably not 1937, as Tom Lasky played four matches for Fitzroy in 1937.

Lasky was cleared back to Brunswick in 1938.

Comparing identified players to team lists: two lists from 1936 and two from 1938 show a much stronger match to the 1936 team lists. In fact all identified players appear in the 1936 lists apart from Warden.
