Collingwood played three players aged 18, including a young Bill Twomey, and another who had just turned 17 but playing his second season, and 29th career match, Len Fitzgerald. In contrast Essendon's youngest players were over 21.
Collingwood finished the Home and Away Season second on the ladder behind first place Essendon.
In the Finals, Essendon and Collingwood drew their semi-final match, Essendon rallied in the final quarter kicking 5 5 (35) to Collingwoods 2 7 (19) to draw the match with both teams on exactly 100 points.
Essendon won the replay, forcing Collingwood out of an automatic place in the Grand Final. Collingwood then fell to Melbourne in the Preliminary Final.
