Comment

Bernie Shannon played four games in 1951, two home games and two away games. Comparing the team lists for the two home games (players wear black shorts in the photo), the team lists are quite different. One list includes all identified players, the other list does not. This photo is therefore probably taken at Collingwoods Round 7 victory over St Kilda.

Round: 7 Venue: Victoria Park Date: Sat, 09-Jun-1951
Collingwood 13 19 (97)
St Kilda 11 12 (78)

AFL Tables website records 20 players for this match, though there are only 19 in the photo. The photo does not include Ron Kingston which is included on the AFL tables list

Collingwood ended the 1951 Home and Away season in second place on the ladder, behind Geelong. Geelong (Eventual premiers) easily accounted for Collingwood in the semi final, defeating Collingwood by 82 points, George Goninon kicked 11 goals.

Collingwood were forced to face Essendon in the Preliminary final. Collingwood started the Preliminary Final well and by half time led by 25, Collingwood continued well and lead by 24 points at three-quarter time, but a five goal to one goal final term turned the game for Essendon who came back to win by two points.
