Comment

This is the Geelong (VFL) Second Eighteen of 1937. The team is photographed at the MCG, in front of Bay 3, almost certainly on the day of their Grand Final victory. Geelong were Seconds Premiers in 1937 (and again in 1938).

Player names were completed by reference to names on framed version of this image kept in the NSM Boyles Collection.

The presence of Clyde Helmer in the back row (fifth from left) indicates this is the 1937 Seconds team. Helmer was at centre-half-forward in the 1937 (Seconds) Premiership win but played (sensationally at that) for Geelong seniors in 1938. Helmer, from Mooroopna and the uncle of fifties Geelong player John Helmer, had a successful but all too brief career with the Cats. He was tragically killed while serving overseas in World War Two. For his biography, see J. Main and D. Allen, Fallen - the Ultimate Heroes, Melbourne, Crown Content, 2002.

Captain ‘Bob’ Walker is at the centre of the group, fourth from the left in the middle row. Walker is also at the centre of 122_183 - Geelong Seconds Circa 1941-44.

Jack Walker, second from the right in the top row, is also shown in 122_183 - Geelong Seconds Circa 1941-44. The player third from the right in the middle row, E.Tucker, appears in 125_013 - Prahran Senior Team circa 1939-41.

Photo taken before start of match. Sparse crowd. White shorts. Seven officials attached to the playing group. Cannot identify officials. Emulsion damage on right-hand side but no players obscured.
