A notable sportsman of an order generation is Cr. John Riordan JP. of Shepparton. Possessing the sporting flair. he was not only a champion rover on the football field, ut was prominent in the running game.

His football career started with Picola with which he was associated in 1906, 1907 and 1908. The following year saw him with the Essendon Association team, in 1910 and 1911 he played with Northcote, also in the Victorian Association and in the following three years he was one of the stars of the Echuca club. An unnerving stab kick with either foot he roved to Dave Mc-Namara and Frank Bourke, reputed to be the best ruck in the Goulburn Valley in those days.

Although his active athletic career, was ending when he moved to Shepparton, he continued to prove an asset to sport on the administrative side and at various times has held executive office in most of Shepparton’s major sporting activities, including the bowling court, tennis clubs footballers and carnivals committee.

He has been a member of the borough council since its inception—is a past mayor of Shepparton and has been chairman of the parks and gardens committee continuously since its creation. This is the committee most closely associated with providing facilities for every branch of sport. It has had some tough problems to solve and although sporting clubs are clamouring for more accommodation it has done much to foster sport in Shepparton, particularly its development of the lake area while potentially there are great possibilities for Princess Park. In all these matters. Cr. Riordan has been tireless in endeavouring to help all branches of sport.

His council colleagues often look to Cr. Riordan’s expert knowledge for guidance on sporting questions while many sporting bodies when in trouble go to him as a sort of elder statesman in the sporting sphere.
