LEAGUE FOOTBALLERS OF 1950-CENTRE HALF-BACKS – Percy Taylor

Argus 13-May-1950 P7

MARTY MCDONNELL, Footscray's brilliant centre half-back, is a district boy, whose progress had been followed by League scouts for some years before, at 17, he joined the club. He came from West Footscray in the Federal District League, where he was regarded as the most promising player of that period.

Just when he was settling down the war whisked him away, and he played little, if any, football from the time he was 20 until he reached 24. Since then, however, he has gone on to great things, and has been almost a regular State player, being in the carnival team in 1947, in the West in 1948, and in Sydney last year.

Marty is a New Zealander, but came here too young to have been bitten by the Rugby germ! He is married, with one child, lives in Footscray, and is a clerk in a big meat works.
