LEAGUE FOOTBALLERS OF 1950-CENTRE HALF-BACKS – Percy Taylor

Argus 13-May-1950 P7

NORMAN JOHNSTONE, a superbly built player-he is 6ft. and nearly 15st-has given great service to Fitzroy as a centre half-back. He came to the club in 1944 from Chelsea, and had played 94 games up to the end of last season.

His ground play-for a man of his build-is extraordinarily good, and he is tenacious, vigorous, and deter- mined. He never gives up, and he worries his opponent by the way he sticks to him.

When he secures the ball he usually tops it off with a beautiful long, driving drop kick. As a high mark he is not extraordinary, which is one reason why he has developed into a good spoiler. The close attention he gives to his opponent naturally has a psychological effect.

Norman is married, with three children, and lives in Mordialloc. He is an expert rabbit grader in a big firm. At Fitzroy he is regarded as a good club man and a good friend.
