Located in Melbourne's North East, Northcote was home of a number clay pits including the Northcote Patent Brick Company. The 'Brickfielders' team joined the VFA in 1908 and played in the competition until 1987.

Northcote's most successful period in VFA football were the depression years of the 1930's where the club won all of it's five VFA first division premierships.

After the second war the club fell into decline. In 1961 the team won the VFA second division premiership. The club won one other second division premiership in 1982.

Doug Nicholls played for the club for five years and was coach in 1940 and 1947. Nicholls later became a VFL interstate player (for Fitzroy), and was a minister, indigenous activist and was Governor of South Australia 1976-77.
