Introduction

On Saturday 26th Septemper 1953 in front of 89,060 fans, Collingwood defeated reigning premiers Geelong avenging their loss to Geelong in the 1952 Grand Final.

Season and Lead-up

Geelong

Geelong were reigning premiers and had won the 1952 and 1951 premierships. In 1953 the team was without two experienced placers from 1952, Tom Morrow and Norm Scott but still retained experienced finals players; six of Geelong's 1953 grand final's players (including Bob Davis, Fred Flanagan, Russell Renfrey) had already played over 100 games each.

In 1953 Geelong again finished the Home and Away season on top of the ladder, but were defeated by Collingwood by 30 points in the Semi-Final, and had to come back and defeat Footscray by 26 points in the Preliminary Final.

In 1953, Bernie Smith (4th) and Peter Pianto (17th) were Geelong's top Brownlow Medal place-getters, with Pianto also receiving Geelong's Best and Fairest player for the season.

George Goninon, Geelong's leading Goal Kicker 1950,1951,1952, and 1953 had a sudden loss of form and did not play in the preliminary final or Grand Final. The loss of their key full forward was a major blow to Geelong. In an interview with Ken Piesse, appearing in the Sunday Herald Sun September 23, 2007, Goninon indicated that the exclusion was not because of his form but a moral stand by the club because of an affair. Geelong also missed key defender Russell Middlemiss in the Grand Final due to injury.

Collingwood

Leading into 1953, Collingwood had been finalists in 6 out of the 8 seasons since 1945, but had not won a grand final since 1936. They had also lost the 1952 Grand Final to Geelong.

During 1953 Collingwood did not have a dominant full forward; and Bob Rose was the team's leading goal kicker with 36 goals (including 7 in the finals). In 1953, Rose also won Collingwood's best and fairest, and came second in the 1953 Brownlow count. Future Collingwood captain Neil Mann polled third in the Brownlow behind Rose. Collingwood matched Geelong for experience with five players in the Grand final with over 100 League games, including captain Lou Richards and Mick Twomey.

Collingwood's young brigade was lead by 19 year old Thorold Merrett who was already in his fourth season. The two most experienced players in the grand final team with only 5 games each were Murray Weideman and Lerrel Sharp both would be strong contributers to the club for the rest of the decade. Tough regular full back Jack Hamilton missed the final series due to a wrist injury.

Collingwood ended the home and away season in second place on the ladder. This was achieved by a victory in the final home and away game against then second placed Footscray. Collingwood then won a 30 point victory against Geelong in the Semi-Final to get a week off and move directly to the Grand Final. The victory in the Semi-Final meant that Collingwood had beaten Geelong in two out of three of their 1953 encounters so far.

The Aftermath

Just days after the Grand Final controversial businessman and Collingwood supporter John Wren died of a heart attack caused by the win. The Australian Dictionary of Bigraphy reports that "Wren had bustled to get behind the Magpie goalposts for the last quarter". The other 'casualty' was the death of Jock McHale, Collingwood's long time coach, of a heart attack that happened the day after the grand final. Mchale had stopped coaching in 1950 but in 1953 was still club vice-president and according to the Australian Dictionary of Biography, had played a role in the selection of the Grand Final side.
