LEAGUE FOOTBALLERS OF 1950-CENTRE HALF-BACKS – Percy Taylor

Argus 13-May-1950 P7

ROY McCONNELL, centre half-back in Essendon's premiership team, made a brilliant debut to senior football. He came into the Essendon side to play in every one of the last 15 games last season, taking the place of the veteran Wally Buttsworth when that grand player was hurt. Essendon quickly began to congratulate themselves in being so fortunate as to find a ready made successor to a fine player, as Roy did net let reputations hinder him from playing well.

He is only 22, is 6ft. 2in. and 12 stone, with great judgment and dash his chief characteristics. For his height he is almost as good as a rover in his ground play, which is extremely valuable in such a position, where the centre half-forward in opposition is just waiting for a fumble to give him an opportunity to dash toward goal.

He is an accountant, and is engaged to be married.
