Happy birthday to us. The website has now been live for 12 months providing a resource for Football historians and those interested in their family history.

Review

The site has grown enormously in the 12 months. There are around 10,000 photos on around 6500 wiki pages.
We have been very grateful for the assistance that people have given us over the year, sending us photos and correcting information. When we started we knew that properly identifying photos would require the effort of the football community and it has been exciting to see that actually happen.

Copyright remains a restriction on what we add to the site. We would like to cartoons, paintings and photos from post 1955 but in many cases the issue is that we do not know who to contact for the proper permission to publish these items. We are also proud of our efforts to address the privacy of living players in the database. In the longer term, this should assist us in providing a boundary for biographical information on people's pages.

The articles have taken an enormous amount of work to research, write and to proofread. In terms of work on the site, over half the work has gone into writing articles. We have no solid direction for 2014 but hope to keep adding photos and information to the site to make it a resource useful to the football community.

A busy couple of weeks as usual. A lot of work has gone into articles that are yet to appear on the site. Hopefully we can get those completed soon.

A number of Football card sets have been added to the site. A number of sets are from the post 1954 period and are in copyright, so it was nice to secure permission to display the images.

New Cards on Site

1949 Kornies Victorian Footballers
1957 Kornies Mascots
1958 Atlantic Picture Pageant
1959 Kornies Swap Cards
1964 Mobil Football Photos

A probable Boyles image has been added

Congratulations to the Hawks in this year's Grand Final!

The Site had Technical Problems

We experienced some software malfunctions and after checking my morning email I found that our site had been taken down the night before without any warning. Our provider then required that we fix the problem immediately, unfortunately I had no idea what was the cause.

A relatively happy ending with the provider making some technical changes and me upgrading tiki wiki to a new version of the software appears to have ended the problem…..Hopefully.

The Site has had a major upgrade.

The new version of our software has caused some teething problems, so I have taken the opportunity to do a range of upgrades:
  • Redesigned the site menu – Player database, Grounds and Timeline are now more prominent
  • Fixed the confusing Commercial Work and Photographers areas, a much better layout has really improved things.
  • Lots of improvement to the Grounds pages
  • New Privacy Policy and implementation in the player pages. This has been lacking for a while. We include information on many people who are still living. Having a clear policy should be an improvement.
  • New article on Hugh Buggy
  • Improved Image Rotation System on Site homepage. The previous version only seemed to work for Administrators.
  • Inclusion on a Website Reader Survey. It would be good to get some feedback about what direction people think we should be taking.
  • Fixed the Comments – they now appear to be working. This appears to be one of the benefits of the upgrade.

We have also added lots of new photos (over 800) have meant that we have now gone over 8,000 photos on the site
  • Sun Newspaper 1925 Football Photos
  • The Age 1929 Football Photos
  • Argus 1950’s Team photos
  • Coca Cola 1962 Football Cards
  • Many better quality cards, including the Reverse in 1934 Hoadleys Victorian Footballers Cards
  • Lots of modern ground photos by Justin Schmidt

New Articles

Two new articles have been added to the site over the last few weeks.

ANFC Football Carnival - Hobart 1947
The Hobart Carnival is certainly interesting as an event. The games were not always that tight and exciting, but the stories, photos and an exciting WA v Victoria match make the Carnival an important piece of our football history.

The Longest Kick in Football History....or not
Who kicked the longest punt in Australian Rules Football History? The answer is complicated and the measurements often dubious, but the stories are more than worth the effort.

New Lists

Adding a list usually requires corrections and standardisation of player names around the site.

Non-Boyles Photos

These continue to be added around the site, especially to Ground and Team pages. Thanks to a number of organisations for the use of their photos on the site, especially those listed below.

Note - All photos on the website should list our source for that photo.

New Lists

New VFA lists. VFA information is much harder to get than VFL/AFL. Most other sites and books usually only include initials and surnames in their lists. We try here to include first names in full and then cross check to see if the reference is to an existing person in our database.

Les Boyd
Loyal Oakley
Billy Quinn
Ted Henrys
Cec Hiscox
Jack Howell b1895
Pat Walsh

Period Football Cards

We cannot thank Damien Grren enough for his fantastic Australian Rules Football Cards Website. Virtually all of our images are from Damien's collection. We have linked cards on our site back to player pages, identified first names for nearly all VFA cards and provided commentary on possible links between card series. If you are interested in football cards then I am sure Damien's site will be your first port of call. Latest card series added to our site are:

Another big fortnight. Lost of updates and new material. We have had terrific support from the Peter Haby, the Hawthorn Club historian which means a number of high quality Hawthorn photos are being added to the site. Two new articles have been completed, one highlighting Charles Boyles non football photography and the other on 1930's aerial photography. And the site has been archived by Pandora and is now part of Trove. The inclusion in Pandora is a great acknowledgement of our work, and provides a benchmark for our work for the future.

Archival at Pandora/Trove

After a request from the State Library of Victoria, Ken and I have allowed the site to be archived at Pandora and a snapshot of our site is now part of the library collection and will appear in searches made on trove. The request reads:

PANDORA, Australia’s Web Archive, was set up by the Library in 1996 to enable the archiving and provision of long-term access to online Australian publications. Since then we have been identifying online publications and archiving those that we consider have national significance.

We have a new website banner, background, buttons, modified css and picture slider on the home page. These have really changed the look of the site. Overall it is a big improvement, hope you like it.

Image

We have also added a Donations page to ask visitors to assist in building club collections. There are a few reasons for adding the page. The first is to support the clubs who have been so generous to us with their assistance, but also there does not seem to be much assistance for those considering donating items. Anyway, the page is a start,

New Pages

We continue to add new pages and edit existing pages. We have been working on other photographers and cartoonists and have added a lot of new material in that area, including new pages for:
Rennie Ellis
Melba Studios

The major project has been the addition of hundreds of images from the 1939 Sporting Globe to the site. These images are mainly action shots and unfortunately, as with most newspapers, the photographer is unknown.

This fortnight a lot of work has gone into adding pages about particularly interesting/significant football games. As well as just being a game page, the pages link back to the individual player pages, adding depth to the player biographies.
