In your picture of the 1954 South Melbourne Football Club training staff William John Lyall is incorrectly identified as W Lyle. He was often known as Bill Lyall. It is correct that he also worked for Melbourne football club from 1948 when Norm Smith was coach. He was responsible for the club's football boots as he was a trained shoemaker who worked for the Repatriation Artificial Limb Factory RALAC in South Melbourne which might explain why he moved from Melbourne to South Melbourne FC. The photo was taken in front of the old brick and wood stand at the Albert Park Oval. BIll also has a pre-war history of training cyclists including Hubert Opperman "Oppie".
He also umpired First Grade Cricket during the Summer around the Northern Suburbs of Melbourne. A photo of Bill Lyall appears on page 194 in the book "The Australian Game of Football where he is standing to the right of Norm Smith.
