    The details on this list prior to the mid-1920s cannot be trusted. Impossible for Hugh Gavin to have won the award in 1903 - he played 0 games for Essendon that year - he was in WA playing in the Goldfields comp around Kalgoorlie. Also, as far as I'm aware no evidence has been cited supporting other claimed winners for that first twenty years or so.
